Pioneers shatter 2 school records on opening day of University of Chicago meet

CHICAGO - Taking the stage with some of the nation's best competition, Grinnell College's men's swimming and diving team rose to the occasion.

The Pioneers shattered school records in two events on the opening day of the University of Chicago Phoenix Fall Classic Friday.

Spencer Pfaff '29, Aidan Donovan '28, Evan Feilmeyer '28 and Rommin Adl '26 toppled the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1 minute, 21.38 seconds. That eclipsed the mark of 1:21.75 set last season.

Grinnell's other mark came from Donovan, who broke the school record in the 50 freestyle not once, but twice. In the prelims, he beat the mark of 20.58 established last season by going 20.51. He followed that up with a fourth-place finish in the finals where he swam 20.41.

Pfaff finished seventh in the event with a time of 20.75, but prior to that held the school record for a while after swimming the opening leg of the 200 freestyle relay in 20.48.

In the 400 medley relay, Grinnell finished 12th as Evan Ingraham '29, Chris Zhou '27, Pfaff and Donovan swam 3:22.22. That time ranks fourth in program history. Ingraham swam the opening 100 backstroke leg of the relay in 49.98, good for fifth in GC history.

Grinnell also got a 10th-place finish from Feilmeyer in the 500 freestyle. He swam 4:36.09.

The Pioneers are sixth in the team standings with 232 points.

The meet continues through Sunday.
