Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Fast start to 2nd half propels Grinnell men's basketball team past Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Though the basketball game lasted 40 minutes, Grinnell College's men's team did all the damage it needed to in a four-minute span Tuesday night.

After trailing Cornell College by a point at halftime, the Pioneers opened the second half by erupting for 15 unanswered points in a 94-75 Midwest Conference victory at Darby Gymnasium. The win was Grinnell's fifth in a row against the Rams.

Grinnell (5-2, 2-0 MWC) found itself in rare territory by trailing 42-41 at intermission. But that was of no concern for the Pioneers, as Gabe Garcia's '27 3-pointer a little over a minute into the second stanza put the Pioneers ahead to stay. The Pioneers then forced a Rams' turnover and Nick Lundy '27 made them pay with a layup for a 46-42 Grinnell lead.

Sean Walser '26 followed with a steal for the Pioneers and Lundy cashed in on another layup for a six-point lead. Zach Rosen '26 got into the scoring act at the 16:58 mark with a jumper for a 50-42 lead. Sean Murphy '26 and John O'Leary '29 added 3-pointers a bit after that, and Murphy also contributed a steal, to make it 56-42 at the 15:59 mark.

Grinnell was never threatened after that on its way to the comfortable victory.

After struggling from the field in the first half, making just 32.4 percent of its shots, Grinnell hit 57.1 percent in the final 20 minutes. Conversely, Cornell (0-7, 0-1 MWC) shot 61.5 percent in the opening half and 31.3 percent after that.

Kai Te Huki '27 led Grinnell's scoring attack with 19 points, while Garcia was also in double digits with 14. Tyler Copes '29 contributed six rebounds and Rosen and Lundy came up with five apiece. Rosen and Garcia also had seven assists apiece. Rosen, Te Huki and Nick Courtney '26 added four steals apiece as the Pioneers tallied a season-high 25.

Grinnell plays its first road conference game Saturday at Illinois College. Action in Jacksonville, Ill., tips off at 3 p.m.
