Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Jaw-dropping 3rd-quarter run lifts Grinnell women's basketball team past Cornell

Pioneers extend home winning streak against Rams to 4 games

GRINNELL, Iowa - After a nip-and-tuck battle with Cornell College resulted in a 30-all halftime tie, Grinnell College's women's basketball team erupted with its most explosive quarter of play in recent history.

The Pioneers opened the second half by scoring 16 unanswered points on their way to a 62-50 victory over the Rams in a big Midwest Conference matchup at Darby Gymnasium. The victory not only snapped a three-game losing streak by Grinnell, but also extended the Pioneers' home winning string against the Rams to four games.

Additionally, the setback snapped a three-team winning streak by a Rams' squad picked to finish second in the MWC standings as Grinnell's stingy defense held the visitors to their second-lowest scoring output of the season.

Nora Lynch '28 was a one-woman wrecking crew for the Pioneers in the third quarter, sinking three consecutive 3-pointers to make it 39-30 with 6:04 left. In the same span, Grinnell (3-6, 1-1 MWC) got a steal from Skylar Thomas '26 while holding Cornell to four missed field goal tries.

After another missed shot by the Rams, Cassidy Pak '28 got into the scoring act with a trey. Juniper Schwartzman '27 followed with layups at the 4:43 and 4:04 marks to push the Pioneers ahead 46-30.

Grinnell nearly held Cornell (3-2, 0-1 MWC) scoreless for the period before the Rams converted a layup with just over a minute left. They added two free throws a bit later, but Kelsey Ericksen '26 stopped the Rams' surge with two charity shots and Lynch added another to make it a 49-34 lead heading into the final quarter.

Lynch led the Pioneers with 15 points, including a 4-of-8 performance from 3-point land. Ava Wu '29 contributed nine points and Schwartzman had eight.

Grinnell owned the boards by a 41-29 margin with Thomas grabbing nine of those and Schwartzman adding seven. The rebound total by Grinnell was a season-high. Thomas also dished out four assists and had three of the team's season-high 14 steals.

The Pioneers are on the road Saturday to play MWC foe Illinois College. Tip-off in Jacksonville, Ill., is set for 5 p.m.
