Huge performance in singles play leads Grinnell comeback against Southwestern

Pioneers rally from early deficit to defeat Pirates

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A huge performance in singles play allowed the Grinnell College women's tennis team to rally for a 4-3 victory over Southwestern University of Texas Saturday in the Pioneers' trip to Tennessee.

Southwestern grabbed the doubles point, winning matches at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. Grinnell did win at the second slot as Isa Voinescu '26 and Paige Sargent '27 earned a 6-2 decision.

Singles is where the Pioneers, ranked 26th nationally with a 10-1 record, began to pour it on. Erin Jarvis '25 earned a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 3, Lily Perrin '25 rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4 and Tan Mukherjee '26 toppled her foe 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.

Sargent clinched the victory in a thriller at No. 2 singles, winning the first set 6-4 before losing the second 6-2. Sargent bounced back to dominate the third set 6-2.

The loss was the first of the season for the Pirates, who fell to 3-1.

Grinnell's next scheduled matches are March 2 against Case Western Reserve University and DePauw University at Greencastle, Ind.
