GC men's basketball finishes off home slate with convincing victory over Beloit

Pioneers move within 1 win of program record

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's basketball team put an exclamation mark on its final home game of the 2024-25 campaign, disposing of Beloit College 109-79 for its largest margin of victory against the Buccaneers in a dozen years.

Grinnell improved to 11-4 in the Midwest Conference and 18-6 overall, leaving the Pioneers just one victory shy of the program record. 

The Pioneers recorded 26 steals in the contest, boosting their season total to 417 to tie the school record. Also Wednesday, David Bluder '25 set the school mark for career games played with 99 and Dillon Gestring '25 moved to sixth with 96.

Grinnell featured a balanced scoring attack, led by Jackson Leone's '25 19-point effort with the aid of 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point land. Leone also had six steals to move closer to GC's single-season record.

Mitch Priest '25 added 14 points as he made 4-of-5 shots from beyond the arc, Gabe Garcia '27 tossed in 13 points, John Vincent '26 and Kai Te Huki '27 tallied 11 apiece and Sean Murphy '26 scored 10. Vincent led the way in rebounds with six and Harris Dar '28 dished out six assists to move his season total to 122, 15th all-time at Grinnell.

A 13-point run midway through the first half propelled the Pioneers. Trailing by two points, Dar made a layup, Priest sank a trey and Garcia scored inside for a 29-24 edge. Te Huki and Murphy followed with consecutive 3-pointers as Grinnell built its lead to 35-24.

The Pioneers upped their lead to 56-41 by halftime and continued to cruise in the second half to dispose of the Buccaneers, who fell to 4-11 in the MWC and 9-15 overall.

Garcia moved up to 16th on Grinnell's season free throws chart with 135. On the team front, Grinnell ranks seventh for rebounds in a season with 1,092, eighth in field goals with 927 and free throws with 496 and 10th in points with 2,722 and assists with 481.

The Pioneers finish the regular season Saturday at MWC regular-season champ Monmouth College, with tip-off slated for 3 p.m. From there it's onto the MWC Tournament, also at Monmouth.
