Hot-shooting GC women close out home portion of slate with 33-point victory

Pioneers go 15-of-30 from 3-point land in easy win

GRINNELL, Iowa - What a way to wrap up the home portion of its 2024-25 campaign!

Grinnell College's women's basketball team, already enjoying one its best seasons in program history,
made the most of its final 2024-25 game at Darby Gymnasium by blasting Beloit College 82-49 Wednesday night. The 33-point margin is Grinnell's largest ever against Beloit.

The victory secured the third seed in the Midwest Conference Tournament for the Pioneers as they improved to 17-7 overall and 11-4 in the league. The overall victory total ranks second in program history and the MWC wins total is best for the program since 2016-17.

Though the weather was frigid outside, the Pioneers were hot from 3-point land. They converted 15-of-30 shots from long range, the fourth-highest total of treys in program history and the most in a game since 2008. The 50 percent success rate is also fourth all-time and tops for the program since 2010.

Grinnell stretched its winning streak to six games, its longest string of victories since the 2015-16 campaign.

The outcome was never in question, as the Pioneers burst out to a 22-5 lead by the end of the first period and never looked back. It was 2-2 shortly after the tip before the hosts erupted with a 20-1 run. That began with a 7-0 spurt as Sara Booher '25 scored inside, Skylar Thomas '26 drained a 3-pointer and then made a layup. After the Buccaneers, who fell to 2-22 overall and 1-14 in the league, scored for a 9-4 margin, Bailey Strovers '27 made a 3-pointer, Booher sank two free throws, Strovers got a basket and Kelsey Ericksen '26 sank consecutive treys for a 22-4 lead.

The Pioneers upped their lead to 42-17 by halftime and made it 63-33 after three quarters.

Strovers and Thomas led Grinnell's scoring attack with 17 and 16 points, respectively. The point total for Thomas, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on 3-pointers, was a career-high. Strovers added a career-high four steals and also grabbed seven rebounds. Cassidy Pak '28 had six boards, a career-best, while Juniper Schwartzman '27 also got six rebounds. Nora Lynch '28 and Nikki Ware '25 each had four assists, with Lynch's total serving as a career-high.

On the program's career chart, Ware now ranks 12th in points with 960 and 17th in assists with 183, while Strovers is 13th for 3-pointers with 72 and Booher third in games played with 93. Booher has 256 rebounds this season and Strovers 207, which rank third and 13th in program history, respectively. Strovers is 12th in 3-pointers for a season with 51.

As a team, Grinnell's point total of 1,655 is second all-time and the free throw count of 374 ranks third. Grinnell also has 318 assists, sixth all-time, and 542 field goals, which is 12th.

The Pioneers conclude the regular season Saturday at Monmouth College. Tip-off is 1 p.m. From there, they will turn their focus to the MWC Tournament where they meet second-seeded Lawrence University on Feb. 28 at Ripon, Wis.
