More records come crashing down as Grinnell men enjoy another big day at MWC Championships

Fitzgerald leads the way for Pioneers

GRINNELL, Iowa - With Kevin Fitzgerald '25 leading the charge, Grinnell College's men's swimming and diving team put on a spectacular performance at the Midwest Conference Championships Friday at Russell K. Osgood Pool.

Fitzgerald upped his career MWC title count to 19 with three victories Friday, including an NCAA "B" cut effort in the 200-yard individual medley. He beat his previous MWC, school and pool marks of 1 minute, 49.96 seconds, as well as the meet record of 1:50.91 set in 2014 by Michael Brus, with a winning effort of 1:48.99. That time was selected for last year's NCAA Championships.

Grinnell has 304.5 points after Friday's action, well ahead of runner-up St. Norbert College's total of 210.

Fitzgerald was joined by Rommin Adl '26, Aidan Donovan '28 and Adam Feilmeyer '25 to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:21.80, beating the previous MWC, meet, school and pool records of 1:22.82. Their time was just .25 of a second off an NCAA "B' cut. Adl now has 14 MWC titles to his credit.

The 50 freestyle was a wild one, as Adl broke his own school record in the prelims with a time of 20.94 before Donovan swam 20.91. Donovan then rebroke his mark with a clocking of 20.71 in the final, beating a St. Norbert College foe by .02 of a second. Adl was third in 20.81.

Grinnell's other victories came from Evan Feilmeyer '28 in the 500 freestyle and the 400 medley relay team of Sam Larsen 25, Chris Zhou '27, Evan Feilmeyer and Fitzgerald. Feilmeyer's time of 4:32.10 ranks second in program history and the 400 medley time of 3:21.68 is also second.

Noah Tsukuda '27 was runner-up in the 500 freestyle in 4:36.33, which ranks fourth all-time, and Larsen placed fourth in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.33, which is 11th.

Grinnell got fifth-place finishes from Cadel Saszik '28 in the 500 freestyle (4:45.24, 16th all-time) and Adam Feilmeyer in the 50 freestyle (21.13, fifth all-time).

Saszik was sixth in the 500 freestyle in 4:49.34 and Jacob Lester '25 placed eighth in 4:56.08.

The meet continues at 10 a.m. Saturday.
