Senior Day is record day for Grinnell College women's basketball team

Pioneers post largest margin of victory ever over Lake Forest

GRINNELL, Iowa - Senior Day was a record day for the Grinnell College women's basketball team.

The Pioneers beat Lake Forest College by the largest margin in the series' 35-year history, toppling the visitors 71-45 Saturday afternoon before an enthusiastic crowd at Darby Gymnasium. 

The 26-point point margin of victory extended Grinnell's winning streak to four games in a battle crucial to the Midwest Conference standings. The previous high for margin of victory in the series was 24 points.

Grinnell remained third in the league standings at 9-4 while improving to 15-7 overall. That matches the most overall victories for the program since the 2015-16 campaign. Lake Forest fell to 2-10 in the MWC and 4-17 in all games.

Bailey Strovers '27 led Grinnell with 13 points, while Sara Booher '25 celebrated Senior Day with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Skylar Thomas '26 added 11 points and Nikki Ware '25 and Cassidy Pak '28 scored 10 apiece.

Pak and Thomas each tallied career-highs of three steals, and Pak also dished out three assists.

The outcome was never in question, as Grinnell bolted out to a 21-4 lead by the end of the first period. Strovers began the game with a 3-pointer before Lake Forest got a bucket. The Pioneers followed with a nine-point run as Strovers got a layup, Thomas drained a trey, Booher scored inside and Thomas sank two free throws for a 12-2 lead.

After two free throws by the Foresters, Booher got a layup, Ware made a 3-pointer, Booher cashed in on two free throws and Carolyn Pierce '27 made a layup for a 21-4 edge.

Grinnell led 38-18 at halftime and 59-33 after three quarters on its way to the easy victory.

On Grinnell's career chart, Booher moved up to fourth in rebounds with 712, eighth in games played with 91 and 19th in field goals made with 290. Booher has 240 rebounds this season, fourth in program history, and Strovers' 194 boards rank 15th.

As a team, Grinnell has season totals of 345 made free throws (fourth in program history), 174 3-pointers (fifth), 974 rebounds (sixth), 1501 points (11th) and 287 assists (11th).

The Pioneers travel to Jacksonville, Ill., Tuesday to face Illinois College. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
