Grinnell takes opener from Westminster, loses nightcap in extra innings

FULTON, Mo. - Grinnell College's baseball team collected a split at Westminster College Saturday, winning the opener 3-1 before losing the nightcap 7-6 in extra innings.

Ian Feld '25 earned the pitching victory in the opener, giving up just three hits and striking out seven in four innings. Ajay Griffin '27 followed with an inning on the mound with three Ks, while Matthew Nakamoto '25 collected the save with one-hit ball and three strikeouts over the final two innings.

The Pioneers outhit the hosts 8-5, with Connor Goodson '26 getting three hits. Grinnell (2-3) scored twice in the third inning on Mac McCain's '25 two-run homer to left. After the hosts scored in the bottom of the third, the Pioneers countered in the fourth when McCain lofted a sacrifice fly to right.

In the second game, Grinnell gained a 6-4 lead through 5-½ innings before Westminster (5-4) scored one run in both the sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings. The hosts scored again in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory.

Grinnell, which had five hits in the game, trailed 1-0 before scoring twice in the second on Jacob Gaynor's '28 two-run groundout. Westminster went ahead 4-2 in the third, but the Pioneers got one run back in the fourth on Brandon Chung's '27 sacrifice fly to left. In the sixth, the Pioneers put up three runs as Ben Kelly '25 hit an RBI double and Goodson hit into a fielder's choice to plate two runs.

Kenji Kajita '25, the fourth Pioneer pitcher, suffered the loss.

The teams meet for two more games Sunday.
