Grinnell softball team wraps up Florida trip with pair of tough losses

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team wrapped up action at the Space Coast Spring Games Tuesday with two tough losses to the University of Hartford and Hamilton College.

Facing Hartford, which was an NCAA Division I program through 2022, Grinnell grabbed a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning before falling 6-5.

Lane Kohler '25 had a strong starting pitching effort, striking out four and giving up just one earned run in 4.2 innings.

Grinnell outhit Hartford 9-8, with Kayla O'Malley '28 getting three of those hits and Sofia DiCarlo '25 and Hannah Dykstra '25 adding two each.

The Pioneers tied the game at 1-all in the third inning on O'Malley's RBI double to left field. After Hartford went up 4-1, Grinnell grabbed the lead with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth. In the fourth, Elyse Pender '27 rapped an RBI single to center. DiCarlo belted a two-run double to left in the fifth and Dykstra had a run-scoring single up the middle. Dykstra's RBI was the 61st of her career, eighth all-time at GC.

Hartford rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on from there for the victory.

The Pioneers then dropped a 10-2, six-inning decision to Hamilton. The Pioneers led 2-0 through two innings, as Lexi Herrick's '28 bases-loaded walk and an error accounted for a run in each inning.

Hamilton countered with three runs in both the third and fifth innings and four more in the sixth. O'Malley and Lindsey Schultz '27 had Grinnell's hits in the game and Emma Trani '26 had the tough-luck pitching loss, giving up just four hits and fanning two in four innings.

Grinnell, 3-7, is slated to play its first home games Saturday when Buena Vista University visits for a doubleheader. The first pitch is at 1 p.m.
