Hits come early and often in Pioneers' twin bill with Buena Vista

Teams combine for 47 hits in Beavers' softball sweep

GRINNELL, Iowa - Taking advantage of windy conditions, Grinnell College and Buena Vista University combined for 47 hits in the Pioneers' home softball opener Saturday afternoon at the Softball Complex.

Buena Vista came out on top in both games, posting a 10-7 victory in the opener and rallying for a 7-5 victory in the second contest.

Each team had 10 hits in the opener, with Lindsey Schultz '27 getting three for the Pioneers and Nicolette Parrott '26 adding two.

The squads went back and forth early, with Grinnell scoring two runs in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Kayla O'Malley '28 and a single from Schultz. The Pioneers added a run in the third on Parrott's RBI single and added two in the fourth to tie it at 5-all on run-scoring groundouts by Leanna Guerra '28 and Sofia DiCarlo '25.

Buena Vista put up five runs in the fifth before Grinnell rallied for two in the sixth on Guerra's RBI double and a run-scoring single from DiCarlo. Lane Kohler '25 and Emma Trani '26 shared pitching duties for Grinnell, with each striking out two. Trani was tagged with the loss.

Grinnell (3-9) led the second game 5-4 before a three-run sixth inning by Buena Vista (5-9) put the Beavers in command for good.

Grinnell's three-run third saw a two-run single by Hannah Dykstra '25 and an RBI single by Kohler. Dykstra now ranks seventh in program history with 63 RBIs and is fifth in walks with 49. Guerra knocked in one run in the fourth on a fielder's choice and got another on DiCarlo's RBI single.

The Pioneers had 13 hits, with Dykstra and Kohler getting three apiece and O'Malley and Schultz adding two. The Pioneers used three pitchers in the game, with Elise Strohm '28 absorbing the loss.
