Grinnell softball team comes up short against Simpson team receiving votes for national rankings

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team faced a tall task Friday, squaring off against a Simpson College team receiving votes for the national rankings.

After losing the opener 12-2 in five innings, the Pioneers regrouped in the second game and trailed just 3-1 in the fourth inning before the Storm scored six unanswered runs for a 9-1, five-inning decision.

Grinnell (3-13) managed four hits in the second game, doubles by Leanna Guerra '28 and Hannah Dykstra '25 and singles from Lane Kohler '25 and Elyse Pender '27.

After falling behind 3-0, the Pioneers scored in the fourth when Dykstra's double to left-center plated Guerra. Simpson came back with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for the mercy-rule victory.

In the opener, Simpson (17-2) scored all its runs in the first two innings with three in the first and nine in the second. The Pioneers scored both their runs in the fifth when Dykstra pushed across a run on a fielder's choice and Pender added an RBI single to left-center.

Besides Pender, others with hits for Grinnell were Guerra and Dykstra. During the games, Dykstra moved up to fourth at Grinnell in career walks with 50.

Grinnell is slated to host the College of Saint Benedict on Sunday. The twin bill starts at noon.
