Big innings by College of Saint Benedict dash Pioneers' hopes

Grinnell grabs early leads in both games of doubleheader before falling

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team saw early leads evaporate due to big innings by the College of Saint Benedict in both games of a twin bill Sunday.

In the opener, Grinnell grabbed a 7-4 lead on a blustery day at the Softball Complex before the visitors scored a run in the fourth inning and then erupted for an eight-run fifth on their way to a 16-7 victory.

In the second game, Saint Benedict overcame a 2-1 deficit with an 11-run barrage in the fourth inning in a 13-2 victory.

The teams combined for 27 hits in the marathon first game, with Grinnell getting nine of those. Kayla O'Malley '28, Leanna Guerra '28 and Elyse Pender '27 were credited with two hits apiece.

Each team scored twice in the first inning, with RBI singles by Guerra and Asianah Gostyla '28 accounting for Grinnell's tallies. The Pioneers fell behind 4-2 before a five-run outburst in the third inning. Pender hit a two-run single in the frame, Lane Kohler '25 and Guerra each plated runs with singles and another run crossed on a wild pitch.

The Bennies answered with a solo run in the fourth, eighth in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Kohler and Ella Young '28 shared pitching duties for Grinnell, each striking out one.

In the second game, Grinnell (3-15) grabbed a 2-1 lead on defending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Pitcher of the Year Ellie Peterson. Both runs came in the bottom of the third on Lindsey Schultz's '27 two-run triple.

Saint Benedict (8-8) responded with an 11-run fourth inning and another run in the fifth.

Schultz had both of Grinnell's hits, while Emma Trani '26 and Elise Strohm '28 shared the Pioneers' pitching duties. Trani struck out the batters.

Hannah Dykstra '25 scored a run during the day, boosting her career total to 85 which ranks sixth in Pioneer history.

Grinnell is home again Tuesday when Coe College visits for a doubleheader. The first pitch is at 3 p.m.
