GC softball team puts up great fight at nationally-ranked Central

PELLA, Iowa - It'll go down in the books as a doubleheader loss, but Grinnell College's softball team put up a strong fight against the nationally-ranked Central College Dutch Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers led the opener 2-1 entering the bottom of the third inning before losing 7-2 to the 21st-ranked Dutch, and then trailed just 3-0 entering the bottom of the third of the second game before falling 11-3.

Grinnell managed four hits in the opener, those coming from Sofia DiCarlo '25, Hannah Dykstra '25, Lane Kohler '25 and Asianah Gostyla '28. Pitcher Emma Trani '26 kept the Dutch on their heels for a good portion of the game and fanned a batter.

The Pioneers' lone runs came in the top of the first on Dykstra's two-run double to left. The Dutch scored a run in the first, two in the third and fourth and solo runs in the fifth and sixth.

Grinnell (7-21) outhit the Dutch 9-7 in the second game, but were stung by five errors. Kayla O'Malley '28, Lindsey Schultz '27 and DiCarlo all had two hits for Grinnell. Kohler had a solid pitching outing, striking out one and allowing just six hits in 3.1 innings.

Central (17-3) scored twice in the first, once in the second, five times in the third and three times in the fourth. Grinnell made one last-ditch effort in the fifth, getting a two-run infield single from Dykstra and a run-scoring infield single by Lexi Herrick '28. Dykstra's RBIs put her at 80 in her career, sixth all-time at Grinnell.

Grinnell is on the road next weekend, playing Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., on Saturday.
