Pioneer softball team bounces back to earn split with Lawrence in key MWC battle

Kohler is sharp in pitching circle in Game 2 victory

APPLETON, Wis. - In what is bound to be a dogfight for the four Midwest Conference Tournament spots, Grinnell College's softball team collected a split with fellow tourney contender Lawrence University in a key league doubleheader Saturday.

Lawrence posted a 3-0 shutout in the opener, but the Pioneers came back to take the second game 6-1.

Grinnell is fifth in the league with a 5-3 record while moving to 8-22 overall. Lawrence, third in the MWC at 7-3, is 14-16 in all games.

Lane Kohler '25 was sharp in the pitching circle for Grinnell in the second game, scattering five hits and striking out seven. The Pioneers' offense pounded out nine hits, including three by Kayla O'Malley '28 and two from Elyse Pender '27 and Kohler.

Grinnell went up 3-0 with two runs in the first on Pender's two-run single to center and another in the second when Lindsey Schultz '27 hit an RBI single to left.

The Vikings scored in the fifth, but the Pioneers gave themselves some breathing room in the latter innings. O'Malley had an RBI single up the middle in the sixth and Kohler sent a two-run single up the middle in the seventh.

Emma Trani '26 pitched well in the opener, giving up seven hits and fanning two batters. O'Malley led the Pioneers' offense with two hits. The Vikings scored two runs in the first and another in the sixth.

During the games, Hannah Dykstra '25 moved up to fourth on Grinnell's career stolen bases list with 26.

Grinnell is back in action again Monday with a twin bill at Knox College.
