Grinnell posts valiant comeback before falling to Vikings' baseball team

APPLETON, Wis. - Grinnell College's baseball team used a valiant comeback to tie Sunday's game at Lawrence University, but the Vikings punched out two runs in the bottom of the seventh and held on from there for a 5-3 victory.

Grinnell (16-12, 4-5 Midwest Conference) outhit the Vikings 10-7 with Ben Skiles '28 getting three hits and Mac McCain '25 and Joe Chanis '27 adding two apiece.

Five Grinnell pitchers combined on a seven-hitter, with Daniel Shaul '26 showing plenty of spark by issuing no hits and striking out four in 3.1 innings.

Lawrence (11-12, 5-4 MWC) scored three runs in the bottom of the first, only to see Grinnell rally with a bases-loaded walk to Ethan Crawford '25 in the third. In the fourth, another run scored on an error and Connor Goodson '26 belted a solo homer to left in the fifth to tie things at 3-all.

A two-run homer by the Vikings in the seventh provided the game-winner.

During the games, McCain moved up to third at Grinnell for career games played with 138 and Crawford jumped to fifth in total bases with 241.

Grinnell is on the road again next weekend with a three-game set at Beloit College.
