Grinnell softball team bounces back to trounce Knox in 2nd game of doubleheader

Dykstra ties program lead for career walks in victory

GALESBURG, Ill. - After suffering a tough 6-4 setback to Knox College to open action Monday, Grinnell College's softball team came back with a vengeance to dispose of the host school 10-2 in Midwest Conference play.

The Pioneers pounded out 11 hits in the second game, including three by winning pitcher Lane Kohler '25. Kayla O'Malley '28 and Lexi Herrick '28 added two hits apiece. Hannah Dykstra '25 didn't have a hit in the game, but drew a walk to move into a tie for the program career lead with 61.

In the pitching circle, Kohler had yet another strong performance by tossing a four-hitter and striking out four.

Grinnell (6-4 MWC, 9-23 overall) got all the scoring it needed in the first inning when Sofia DiCarlo '25 hit an RBI single to center and Dykstra plated a run on a groundout. Grinnell made it 4-0 in the top of the sixth when consecutive groundouts by DiCarlo and Dykstra resulted in two more runs.

The Pioneers exploded in the seventh inning with six runs. Kohler had a two-run single to right, Leanna Guerra '28 lifted a two-run double to center and two more runs came across on a fielder's choice and error.

Knox (1-9 MWC, 1-28 overall) won the opener 6-4 despite Grinnell outhitting the Prairie Fire 11-9. Lindsey Schultz '27, Elyse Pender '27 and Guerra fueled Grinnell's offense with two hits apiece.

Grinnell fell behind 3-0 before tying it in the fifth on RBI singles up the middle by Dykstra, Pender and Guerra. Knox went ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Pioneers again tied it on Schultz's RBI single through the right side in the sixth. The hosts scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and held on from there.

The Pioneers' regular-season home finale is set for Saturday when Cornell College visits for a doubleheader. Grinnell's seniors will be honored prior to the 1 p.m. first pitch at the Softball Complex.
