Grinnell softball team drops pair of contests to Coe

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team grabbed early leads in both games against Coe College Wednesday, but each time the Kohawks rallied to post the doubleheader sweep.

Grinnell led the opener 2-1 after an inning before the Kohawks reeled off 10 unanswered runs for an 11-2 decision at the Softball Complex. In the second game, the Pioneers were up 4-3 after two innings only to see Coe score nine consecutive for a 12-4 decision.

Grinnell managed four hits in the opener, with Kayla O'Malley '28 getting two of those and Hannah Dykstra '25 and Elyse Pender '27 the others. Dykstra's two-RBI double to left in the bottom of the first accounted for the Pioneers' runs.

Coe tied the game with a run in the second and added another in the third before scoring three in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Lane Kohler '25 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell, striking out three in 4.1 innings.

Grinnell (3-17) managed all its runs in the second game on just two hits, those coming from O'Malley and Sofia DiCarlo '25. Grinnell scored twice in the first inning when Lexi Herrick '28 was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Leanna Guerra '28 walking in the same situation. DiCarlo belted a two-run double to left center in the second.

Coe (9-15) went ahead 5-4 in the third and put up seven runs in the fifth.

Emma Trani '26 struck out one in 4.1 innings as GC's starting pitcher.

Dykstra had a stolen base during the games, boosting her career total to 22 which is 10th in program history.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play Saturday when Lake Forest College visits for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
