Grinnell puts up great fight against league favorite in 2nd game of Saturday doubleheader

GRINNELL, Iowa - After getting shut down in five innings of its Midwest Conference opener against Lake Forest College, the Grinnell College softball team put up a great fight in the second game before succumbing Saturday at the Softball Complex.

Though the Pioneers lost the second game 12-4, they had rallied within 6-4 through five innings. Grinnell put together nine hits in the game, with Lindsey Schultz '27 getting three of those and Sofia DiCarlo '25 and Hannah Dykstra '25 adding two each.

Emma Trani '26 had a solid pitching outing and fanned two before Elise Strohm '28 finished off the contest.

Lake Forest scored four runs in the first inning and got another in the third. The Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom of the third on DiCarlo's RBI single up the middle.

After the Foresters scored in the fifth, Grinnell (3-19, 0-2 MWC) pulled within 6-4 when Dykstra bashed a two-run double to left-center and Lexi Herrick '28 plated a run with a groundout. However, Lake Forest added two insurance runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.

Lake Forest (10-10, 2-0 MWC) opened a 7-0 lead in the opener on its way to a 15-1 victory. Lane Kohler '25 accounted for Grinnell's only run in the fourth inning with an RBI single to left-center.

DiCarlo had two of Grinnell's hits to spark Grinnell's offense and Dykstra had a triple, the sixth of her career. That ranks 10th all-time at Grinnell.

Grinnell is at home again Sunday when Beloit College visits for a league doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
