Grinnell softball team celebrates Senior Day with thriller extra-inning victory

O'Malley ties school record for triples in a season

GRINNELL, Iowa - The Grinnell College softball team pulled out one late-inning victory Saturday afternoon, and nearly a pair.

The Pioneers went extra innings with Cornell College in the Senior Day opener on a beautiful day at the Softball Complex, pushing across a run in the bottom of the eighth to win 3-2. Cornell shot out to a 6-1 lead in the second game and hung on for a 6-5 decision.

In the opener, Lane Kohler '25 singled through the left side to open the bottom of the eighth and moved to second on Lindsey Schultz's '27 sacrifice. Sofia DiCarlo '25 followed with a single through the left side, sending Kohler to third. After DiCarlo stole second and Hannah Dykstra '25 reached on a fielder's choice, Kayla O'Malley '28 sent a single through the right side to score Kohler and send the Pioneers into celebration.

Grinnell took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on DiCarlo's two-run single, but the Rams rallied to tie it in the fourth. Emma Trani '26 and Kohler combined pitching duties, each striking out two as Kohler was credited with the win.

The Pioneers' offense was sparked by O'Malley, who had three hits including her school-record sixth triple of the season. That matched Darcy Ward's 2006 total and ranks 10th on Grinnell's career triples chart. DiCarlo added two hits.

Cornell scored three runs to open the second game before the Pioneers got one back with O'Malley's RBI single down the right-field line in the bottom of the first. Each team scored three runs in the fourth, with Grinnell's coming on DiCarlo's two-run single and a one-run double by Dykstra.

Grinnell (7-5 Midwest Conference, 10-24 overall) made it 6-5 in the sixth on Dykstra's RBI single up the middle, but could pull no closer as Cornell (4-8 MWC, 12-19 overall) secured the victory.

Dykstra had three hits for Grinnell and DiCarlo and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 added two apiece. Kohler was tagged with the pitching loss, striking out three in the process.

Dykstra, who previously had tied the school record for walks in a career, now has that mark by herself with 62.

Grinnell has a key MWC doubleheader Sunday, playing at Illinois College at 1 and 3 p.m. The Lady Blues are tied for the league lead.
