Pioneer softball team stymies MWC co-leader Illinois College to remain in hunt for league tourney

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Grinnell College's softball team not only rebounded to win the second game of a doubleheader against Midwest Conference co-leader Illinois College, the Pioneers also moved a step closer to qualifying for the league tourney.

After getting blanked by the Lady Blues 4-0 Sunday afternoon, Grinnell erupted for a six-run third inning in the second game and received a stellar complete-game pitching performance from Lane Kohler '25 for a 6-4 victory.

The Pioneers are alone in fourth place in the league standings with an 8-6 mark, and need only to win one of two games at Ripon College next Saturday to qualify for the MWC Tourney. Illinois College's hopes of hosting the tourney took a hit as the Lady Blues fell into second place with an 11-3 mark while moving to 22-16 overall.

Grinnell put together an 11-hit attack in the second game, with Kayla O'Malley '28 collecting three hits and Lindsey Schultz '27 adding superb defensive play in left field to help preserve the win. In pitching another complete game, Kohler scattered nine hits and struck out three while evening her record at 8-8.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Pioneers went wild. Hannah Dykstra '25 had an RBI double, while Sofia DiCarlo '25, O'Malley, Leanna Guerra '28 and Lexi Herrick '28 all had run-scoring singles. Kohler added the last run by walking with the bases loaded.

The Pioneers were outhit only 8-7 in the first game, with Kohler and DiCarlo each getting two of the hits.

The Lady Blues got solo runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.

Grinnell travels to Rock Island, Ill., on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader at Augustana College. The Pioneers' twin bill at Ripon is Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
