Grinnell softball team comes up short at Augustana

Pioneers outhit hosts 11-4 in opening game but still fall

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Despite outhitting Augustana College by a comfortable 11-4 margin, the Grinnell College softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the hosts in the opening game of a doubleheader Thursday.

Emma Trani '26 had a stellar starting pitching effort for Grinnell, giving up two hits and surrendering just two unearned runs in four innings. Elise Strohm '28 provided strong relief pitching over the final two frames.

Kala Bisterfeldt '28 led the Pioneers' offensive attack with three hits, while Leanna Guerra '28 and Kayla O'Malley '28 had two apiece.

Augustana broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning and scored again in the sixth.

In the second game, Augustana held the Pioneers to a single hit - a single by Lane Kohler '25 - in an 8-0, five-inning victory. The Vikings scored solo runs in the first, second and third innings before breaking things open with a four-run fourth. The hosts finished it off with one run in the fifth.

Grinnell is now 11-27 on the season, while the Vikings improved to 26-12.

The Pioneers will attempt to punch their ticket to their fourth consecutive Midwest Conference Tournament when they play at Ripon College Saturday. They only need to win one of the two games in the doubleheader to punch their ticket to the postseason.

Saturday's first pitch is at 1 p.m.
