Pioneers snap lengthy losing streak in a big way

Grinnell sweeps Beloit with mercy-rule victories

GRINNELL, Iowa - Not only did the Grinnell College softball team snap a lengthy losing streak on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Pioneers did so with authority!

The Pioneers swept Beloit College via the mercy rule in both games of a doubleheader at the Softball Complex to stop a 14-game losing streak that dated back to the team's spring break trip to Florida.

Grinnell (5-19, 2-2 Midwest Conference) captured the opener 12-4 in six innings and then took the second game 9-1 in five innings.

In the opener, Sofia DiCarlo '25 tied a school record with four runs scored while going 3-of-3 at the plate. Lindsey Schultz '26 and Lane Kohler '25 each had two hits to aid the Pioneers' 13-hit attack.

Emma Trani '26 had a strong pitching outing, striking out three and walking none in a complete-game effort.

The teams were tied at 3-all after two innings, with the Pioneers scoring twice in the first on DiCarlo's triple to left field and an error that allowed Hannah Dykstra '25 to reach base. In the second, an error plated a run.

The Pioneers went ahead to stay in the third as Leanna Guerra '28 ripped an RBI double to left and Kohler bashed a run-scoring triple to left. Anne Becker '26 made the most of her first at-bat of the season in the fifth inning with a two-run single to center field.

Beloit (2-23, 0-4 MWC) got one run in the top of the sixth but the Pioneers avoided further damage when Bella Nesbeth '26 caught a tough fly ball in right to end the inning with the bases loaded.

Grinnell ended it in the bottom of the sixth with five runs. Dykstra hit an RBI single to left, Kohler plated two runs with a single up the middle, Nesbeth scored on a wild pitch and Kayla O'Malley '28 drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Grinnell pounded out 11 hits in the second game and was boosted by Kohler's two-hit complete game in the pitching circle. She struck out five and didn't issue a walk.

O'Malley swung a hot bat, going 4-of-4 at the plate. Her hit total ranks third in program history. Lexi Herrick '28 and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 added two hits apiece.

Beloit got on the board first with a run in the second, but then it was all Pioneers. They scored five runs in the third on consecutive RBI triples by O'Malley and Schultz and two-run double by Herrick. In the fifth, Herrick knocked in a run with another double, Dykstra scored on a wild pitch, Kohler hit an RBI single and O'Malley finished the game with an RBI double.

During the day, Dykstra moved up to third on Grinnell's career walks list with 53 and sixth in stolen bases with 23.

The Pioneers play another MWC doubleheader Wednesday when Monmouth College visits the Softball Complex. The first pitch is 3 p.m.
