Grinnell turns the tables on Monmouth with 13-run inning

Pioneers collect MWC sweep against Fighting Scots

GRINNELL, Iowa - What a difference an inning can make.

Trailing 9-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning of Wednesday's softball opener against Monmouth College, Grinnell College erupted for 13 runs in the frame on its way to a 15-10 victory on a beautiful afternoon at the Softball Complex.

The marathon game lasted 2 hours, 38 minutes and saw the pitching staffs combine for more than 300 pitches. Elise Strohm '28 got her first career victory, working four innings and giving up just two runs.

The Pioneers' offense piled up 21 hits, second-best in program history, and the team's 38 at-bats rank 10th. Leading the offensive charge were Sofia DiCarlo '25 and Lane Kohler '25 with four hits each, which rank third all-time at GC. Elyse Pender '27 added three hits.

Monmouth shot out to a 7-0 lead before the Pioneers got solo runs in the third and fourth frames when Pender walked with the bases loaded and DiCarlo reached base on an error.

After the Fighting Scots scored twice in the top of the sixth, Grinnell went wild. Kayla O'Malley '28 had an RBI triple in the inning while Leanna Guerra '28 and Pender each had a pair of run-scoring singles. Lindsey Schultz '27, DiCarlo and Kohler added one RBI single apiece and Schultz also hit a sacrifice fly.

That momentum carried over to the second game as Grinnell (7-19, 4-2 Midwest Conference) sailed to a 14-2 victory.

Kohler tossed a four-hitter and struck out a career-high eight, including a rare four-strikeout fourth inning. DiCarlo and Hannah Dykstra '25 each had three hits in Grinnell's 16-hit attack.

Monmouth (4-20, 0-2 MWC) scored in the top of the first before Grinnell tied it on Dykstra's RBI. In the second, Dykstra belted a two-run double, Guerra plated another run with a double and Kala Bisterfeldt '28, DiCarlo and Pender all had one-run singles for a 7-1 lead.

Grinnell put up four runs in the third on DiCarlo's two-run double and RBI singles from Dykstra and Pender. In the fourth, DiCarlo hit another two-run double and Dykstra added an RBI single.

During the games, Dykstra moved up to second all-time at GC in career walks with 55 and fifth in runs scored with 94.

The Pioneers step out of league play Saturday to face nationally-ranked Central College in Pella. The first pitch is at 1 p.m.
