Grinnell softball team claims regular-season finale to clinch spot in MWC Tourney

RIPON, Wis. - Facing its final opportunity to secure a Midwest Conference Tournament berth, Grinnell College's softball team rose to the occasion.

The Pioneers rebounded from an opening-game loss at Ripon College to roll over the Red Hawks 10-6 Saturday afternoon. That allowed Grinnell to secure the fourth and final seed for next weekend's league tourney.

Kayla O'Malley '28 ripped her season-record seventh triple in the victory and Hannah Dykstra '25 collected four hits, fourth-most in program history. Grinnell had 18 hits as a team, ninth all-time, and the squad's 40 at-bats rank fourth.

Lindsey Schultz '27 and Kala Bisterfeldt '28 supplemented the offensive attack with three hits apiece, while Sofia DiCarlo '25 and Leanna Guerra '28 had two each.

Guerra hit an RBI single in the first and Lane Kohler '25 knocked in a run with a fielder's choice in the second. The Pioneers erupted for six runs in the third inning, with Schultz hitting a two-run single, O'Malley, Bisterfeldt and Elyse Pender '27 adding RBI singles and another run crossing on an error.

Lexi Herrick '28 had an RBI groundout in the fourth and Dykstra added a run-scoring double in the fifth.

Kohler got the pitching win, giving up just three hits and one earned run in four innings.

Ripon scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 6-5. Dykstra led the Pioneers' offense with two hits.

Grinnell (9-7 MWC, 12-28 overall) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on Bisterfeldt's two-run single and Kohler's RBI double. The Red Hawks went on a 5-0 scoring run over the next few innings before the Pioneers tied it in the top of the seventh as O'Malley hit an RBI single and Herrick plated a run on a groundout.

However, Ripon (7-9 MWC, 12-24 overall) got a run via a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

The MWC Tourney will be played either at Lake Forest College or Illinois College. It begins next Friday.
