Late burst of momentum extends Grinnell softball season by another day

Pioneers top Lawrence in extra innings to notch victory in elimination game at MWC Tourney

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - A late burst of momentum helped the Grinnell College softball team extend its season by another day Friday.

Playing Lawrence University in an elimination game of the Midwest Conference Tournament, the Pioneers scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game and rolled up four more in the eighth for a 9-5 victory at Lake Forest College.

Fourth-seeded Grinnell (13-29) will play the loser of Friday's last game, Illinois College or Lake Forest, in another elimination game at 10 a.m. Saturday. The second day of the tourney will be played at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.

Third-seeded Lawrence (19-21) held a 5-4 lead going into the seventh when the Pioneers scratched out a run in the top of the frame. In the bottom of the inning, the Vikings put runners at first and second before a lineout to Sofia DiCarlo '25 at third base forced extra innings.

After two quick outs in the top of the eighth, Kayla O'Malley '28 and Lindsey Schultz '27 reached on consecutive infield singles before DiCarlo reached on an error to score a run. Hannah Dykstra '25 followed with a three-run homer to left - the first round-tripper of the season for the Pioneers - to make it 9-5.

After the Vikings got a hit to open the bottom of the eighth, a double play and groundout preserved Grinnell's victory.

Emma Trani '26 earned the pitching victory in relief, throwing scoreless ball and allowing just two hits in three innings.

Lane Kohler '25, the starting pitcher, led Grinnell's offense with three hits while DiCarlo and Dykstra had two apiece. DiCarlo had seven fielding assists in the game, which ranks seventh all-time at GC.

Grinnell took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Leanna Guerra's '28 RBI groundout. The Pioneers tacked on three more runs in the third on RBI singles up the middle by Dykstra and Kohler, as well as a wild pitch.

Grinnell opened the day with a 10-2, five-inning setback to top-seeded Lake Forest. The Pioneers scored both runs in the fifth on Schultz's two-run double to left-center. Schultz had two of Grinnell's three hits in the game.

Dykstra moved up Grinnell's career chart in numerous categories Friday. She now ranks fifth in RBIs with 91, sixth in home runs with eight, ninth in total bases with 171 and 10th in games played with 130.
