Grinnell baseball team falls just short twice at MWC Tournament

APPLETON, Wis. - Grinnell College's baseball team took both foes it faced in the Midwest Conference Tournament to the limit Friday, but in the end the Pioneers fell short by a run in each game to see its season draw to a close.

The fourth-seeded Pioneers fell victim to a big comeback by top-seeded Lawrence University as the hosts eked out a 10-9 victory at Don Hawkins Field, and then second-seeded Beloit escaped Grinnell's challenge for an 8-7 victory in an elimination game.

Grinnell finished its season with a 23-19 mark, the second-highest win total in program history.

In Friday's opener, the Pioneers bolted out to a 7-4 lead through five innings before the Vikings' late surge. Grinnell's 11-hit attack saw Ethan Crawford '25, Mac McCain '25 and Joe Chanis '27 each collect two hits.

The Pioneers erupted for four runs in the top of the first as McCain knocked in a run with a groundout, Ben Kelly '25 plated a run on a fielder's choice and Chanis bashed a two-run double down the left-field line. Crawford smacked a solo homer to left in the second and Chanis had a two-run double down the left-field line in the fifth.

Lawrence tied the game by the end of the seventh before the Pioneers went ahead 9-7 in the top of the eighth on solo homers by Crawford and Nikolas Ruden '26. However, the hosts scored once in the bottom of the eighth and twice in the ninth for the win.

Jakob Runkel '26 struck out nine in 5.2 innings for Grinnell, while pitcher of record Matthew Nakamoto '25 fanned two in 2.2 innings.

Grinnell lost to Beloit after rallying from a 5-1 deficit. Stuart Cash '27 led the Pioneers' offense with three hits, while Ruden and Sean Tashjian '25 had two apiece.

Crawford's RBI single through the left side in the third inning opened the scoring, but the Bucs then scored five unanswered. Cash hit an RBI double down the left-field line in the bottom of the fifth and in the sixth, Kelly plated a run with a double down the left-field line, Chanis hit an RBI single down the right-field line and Crawford hit a sacrifice fly to center.

Each team scored twice in the seventh, with Tashjian's two-run homer to right-center accounting for the Pioneers' runs. However, Beloit scratched out a run in the top of the eighth and hung on from there.

Grinnell starting pitcher Ian Feld '25 worked 4.1 innings and fanned four batters. Daniel Shaul '26, the third of four Pioneer pitchers, was tagged with the decision.

During the day, Crawford gained sole possession on the Pioneers' career chart for times hit by a pitch with 35. He also ranks eighth in runs scored (107), ninth in hits (148) and 10th in games played (128). Runkel moved up to sixth on the career strikeouts list with 159 and Feld jumped to 10th for innings pitched with 164.1.
