Grinnell men's soccer team sees early lead slip away in setback to Bethel

GRINNELL, Iowa - For most of Friday afternoon's home battle against unbeaten Bethel University, Grinnell College's men's soccer team dominated the Royals.

Grinnell (1-3-3) gained a 1-0 midway through the first stanza and rode that the rest of the half and well into the second. However, the visitors rallied with scores in the 78th and 81st minutes to escape Springer Field with a 2-1 victory.

Grinnell's goal came from Jaxon Willoughby '26 in the 27th minute on an assist by Ryan Huang '26. On the play, Huang gained control of a batted-around ball on the right side of the field. He delivered a perfect 40-yard lofting shot that Bethel's keeper needed a high-flying leap to bat up in the air. The ball came right back down in front of the net and Willoughby, standing in that spot, tapped in the shot for a 1-0 Pioneer edge.

It was Willoughby's second goal of the season and 11th in his career. Huang boosted his career assist total to two.

Grinnell owned a 9-4 edge in shots and 7-2 margin in corner kicks. Willoughby had four shots for Grinnell, Samuel Gojjam '27 added three and Jack Pennachio '28 and Zander Salva '29 had one apiece.

Keeper Jack Alexander '29 made a save for the Pioneers, who play Hamline University at 11 a.m. Sunday. The contest in St. Paul, Minn., was moved up from its original 2 p.m. start due to expected high heat conditions.
