Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

After starting quickly, Pioneer men's soccer team falls to Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – It was a tale of two halves in Sunday's non-conference men's soccer contest pitting the Grinnell College Pioneers and Hamline University Pipers.

Grinnell bolted out to a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Kanata Mizutani '28 and Oliver Northing '26. However, the hosts answered with four scores of their own in the final 45 minutes to come away with a 4-2 victory.

Grinnell broke a scoreless tie in the 19th minute when the Pioneers stole a pass and Northing gained control of the ball deep on the right side. He delivered a perfect cross to Jaxon Willoughby '26 near the far post. Willoughby leaped in the air and headed it out to Mizutani, who fired in a left-footed shot from 10 yards out and past the diving Hamline keeper into the bottom right corner of the net.

Mizutani now has two goals for the season and in his career, while Northing boosted his team-high assist total to two and Willoughby gained his first assist of the year.

Two minutes later, Northing chased down a ball deep in Piper territory on the left side of the pitch and fired a lofting, 25-yard crossing shot over the leaping Hamline keeper into the upper right part of the net. It was Northing's team-high fourth goal of the season and 19th in his career.

Grinnell (1-4-3) outshot the hosts 25-14, holding an 11-4 edge in the first half and 14-10 in the second. The Pioneers also had a 13-9 margin in shots on goal and boasted 15 corners compared to just four for Hamline (6-0-1).

Jack Alexander '29 and Jayson Kunkel '26 each gave up two goals for Grinnell at the keeper spot. Kunkel posted three saves and Alexander a pair.

Grinnell has some time off before traveling to Storm Lake on Sept. 23 for a 7 p.m. bout with Buena Vista University. After that, the Pioneers open Midwest Conference play.
