GRINNELL, Iowa – Earlier this season, Grinnell College's women's soccer team was having trouble finding the win column.
Now there is no stopping the Pioneers.
Grinnell posted its second victory in as many days Sunday afternoon, blanking the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater from the highly-regarded Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) 1-0 in scorching hot conditions at Springer Field.
Sarah Travis '27 gave Grinnell all the scoring it needed in the first half, and keeper
Peyton Dixon '27 recorded her second shutout of the season and 20
th of her career.
Zoe Kunzman '28 initiated Grinnell's goal in the 15
th minute of action when she was sent to deliver a corner kick from the left side. Kunzman's kick could not have been more perfectly placed, as Travis outjumped her defenders to the left of the net. While in the air, she placed a beautiful header into the upper left portion of the net out of the reach of UW-Whitewater's lunging keeper. It was Kunzman's first career assist at GC.
Grinnell (2-3-1), which also posted a 1-0 victory Saturday over Benedictine University, got off four shots in the game. Three of those were in the first half, the same total as UW-Whitewater.
Besides Travis, others with shots were
Keiko Smith '26,
Teya Lochridge '29 and
Addison Thornberg '29.
UW-Whitewater (3-2-2) outshot Grinnell 9-1 in the second half, but the Pioneer defense and Dixon clamped down to deliver the victory.
The Pioneers have nearly a week off before hosting Westminster College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
