Pioneer netters fall short in 4-set test at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team fought back valiantly to tie Wednesday's non-conference test at Simpson College after dropping the opening set.

However, the Storm rallied with two set victories to close out the 25-18, 18-25, 25-17, 25-19 win Wednesday night.

After seeing the hosts escape with the opening-set win, Grinnell bounced right back to its feet in the second. With the score tied 6-all, the Pioneers went on a key 6-1 run to open up a five-point lead. Emilee Appel '29 had an ace serve during the run, while Nicole Mlynski '26 and Millie Leonard '27 each posted kills.

Simpson came back, though, closing within 17-15 and 19-17. A Storm attack error and consecutive kills by Kylie Snell '26 stopped the bleeding as the 4-8 Pioneers stretched their cushion to 22-17.

Following a Storm timeout, an attack error by the hosts and Mlynski's kill made it 24-17. Simpson then registered a kill, but followed with a setting error to provide Grinnell the winning point.

The 9-2 Storm broke out to leads early in both the third and fourth sets on their way to securing the victory.

Leonard was Grinnell's lone player in double-digit kills with 11, while Leticia Machado '29 and Sullivan added six apiece. Kylie-Ann Smith '27 dished out 33 assists and Gabby Choy '26 served four of the Pioneers' seven aces. Appel added two aces.

In the digs department, Choy led the Pioneers' effort with 19. Gracie Lim '28 contributed 15, Smith added 13, Sullivan rang up 11 and Machado tallied 10.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play Saturday at Beloit College. Besides facing the Buccaneers in league play, the Pioneers will also meet Saint Mary's College of Indiana in the triangular.
