Results

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College's volleyball team opened Midwest Conference play in dominating fashion Saturday, toppling Beloit College by a 25-11, 25-14, 25-11 score.

Grinnell, which stretched its winning streak against the Buccaneers to seven dating back to 2018, followed that match with a thrilling five-set loss to unbeaten Saint Mary's College of Indiana.

The Pioneers blistered Beloit with a .375 hitting efficiency while holding the hosts to a negative number. Top hitters for Grinnell were Keira Sullivan '27 (11 kills, .450 efficiency), Millie Leonard '27 (10 kills, .333 efficiency) and Leticia Machado '29 (seven kills, .467 efficiency).

Kylie-Ann Smith '27 and Marlowe Hurst '29 added 21 and 15 assists, respectively, and Smith served seven aces. The aces mark ranks sixth in program history for a three-setter. Smith also had 10 digs.

The Pioneers used a five-point run in the opening set to turn a 9-7 lead into a 14-7 margin, while a seven-point spurt in the second set on Machado's serve helped Grinnell open up a 14-8 lead after being behind. The third set was tied 4-all before Grinnell scored seven in a row on Smith's serve. The Pioneers never looked back after that.

Grinnell then lost to Saint Mary's, which is 12-0 on the season. The Belles won by scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 15-10.

Four Pioneers had double-digit kills, with Leonard and Machado tallying 13 apiece, Sullivan getting 11 and Nicole Mlynski '26 adding 10. Smith dished out 37 assists and Hurst contributed 10. Smith also served three aces and Snell put up four blocks. In the digs department, Gracie Lim '28 had 15, Smith and Sullivan added 11 apiece and Machado had 10.

The Pioneers broke out to an 18-11 lead in the first set before Saint Mary's rallied, closing within 21-18. However, Smith went on a service run to put Grinnell at set point before Snell later delivered the winner on a kill.

Grinnell lost the next two sets and dug a sizable deficit in the fourth before awakening, using a 6-0 run to go ahead 19-17. Sullivan served an ace in that span and Machado added a pair of kills. The Pioneers never trailed again, finishing off the win with a kill by Machado and two hitting errors on the Belles. Saint Mary's bolted out to leads of 6-2 and 10-3 in the final set on its way to securing the victory.

Grinnell will bring a 5-9 mark into Friday's match at Central College. The contest begins at 6 p.m.
