Pioneer volleyball team drops match against tough Central squad

PELLA, Iowa - The Grinnell College volleyball team hung with a well-rounded Central College squad all three sets, but the Dutch escaped with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 home victory Friday night.

In the opening set, things were tight most of the way with Grinnell (5-10) drawing within 16-15 on a Central service error. However, the hosts followed with a seven-point run to pull away.

The second set saw Grinnell take an 8-6 lead on Keira Sullivan's '27 serve and the Pioneers later went ahead 9-7 following a Dutch attack error. But Central answered with a six-point run and was never challenged after that.

Central (13-5) bolted out to an 18-11 lead in the third set and later led 23-17 before the Pioneers made things interesting. Two kills by Sullivan and a pair of attack errors by the hosts allowed Grinnell to pull within 23-21 and force a Dutch timeout. That brief stoppage halted Grinnell's momentum, as Central reeled off two consecutive points to secure the victory.

Sullivan led the Pioneers with 10 kills and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 had 16 assists and an ace. Gracie Lim '28 led the charge in digs with 10, while Gabby Choy '26 and Smith added nine apiece and Sullivan came up with six.

Grinnell has a week off before a pair of tough Midwest Conference road tests, playing at Lake Forest College next Friday night and at Lawrence University the following day.
