GC women's soccer team puts up strong front against unbeaten Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. - Grinnell College's women's soccer team fell behind early and faced the task of playing catch-up the rest of the way in a 2-0 non-conference loss at unbeaten Saint Mary's University of Minnesota Friday afternoon.

Grinnell had a strong showing both offensively and defensively, firing off a season-best five shots while holding the Cardinals to a season-low 10 shots.

The hosts got a goal four minutes into the contest, but the Pioneers' defense clamped down the rest of the half to leave the score 1-0 at intermission. The squads battled on even terms for the first 20 minutes of the second stanza before Saint Mary's scored in the 64th minute for a 2-0 edge. The hosts held on the rest of the way.

Campbell Swaim '29 recorded two shots for Grinnell (0-2-1), while Hollye Anne Brinkley '29, Kate Chung '29 and Addison Thornberg '29 added one apiece.

Grayson Allison '28 had a strong effort at keeper for Grinnell, posting three saves. Saint Mary's (3-0), which held an 8-1 edge in corners, got both goals from Lauryn Skoruppa.

The Pioneers play at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Saturday. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
