GC women's basketball team hands Lawrence first MWC setback

Pioneers never trail on their way to victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - Lawrence University entered Saturday's women's basketball test at Grinnell College as one of two unbeaten teams in the Midwest Conference.

The Pioneers made sure the visitors didn't leave that way, using a fast start and stingy defense to dispose of the Vikings 57-42 at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell's defense limited Lawrence to 22.2 percent shooting from the field, the lowest percentage by a Pioneer foe this season.

Ava Wu '29 had the best game of her short Grinnell stint, scoring a career-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and two 3-pointers. Skylar Thomas '26 enjoyed a stellar all-round game, posting a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards while also collecting four steals. Her rebound and steals totals were career-highs. Nora Lynch '28 added 10 points and dished out four assists for the Pioneers, who improved to 3-2 in the league and 6-7 overall.

Grinnell never trailed in the game, shooting out to a 10-2 lead and building that to 21-7 by the end of the first period. Thomas and Wu each had two buckets in Grinnell's game-opening run and Juniper Schwartzman '27 scored from close range.

Wu hit a jumper to start the second period, giving the Pioneers their largest lead of the game at 23-7.

Grinnell held a 33-21 halftime lead, but the Vikings - who are 4-1 in the MWC and 11-3 overall - caught fire in the third period and twice cut the gap to four points including 44-40 at the end of the frame.

The Pioneers stopped the bleeding, though, as Kelsey Ericksen '26 sank a deep 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter. After a Viking free throw, Thomas hit a layup to make it 49-41.

Lawrence made another free throw at the 5:33 mark, but it's the last point the visitors would score. The Vikings missed their final nine field goal tries of the game while Grinnell got three free throws from both Lynch and Thomas and a pair from Bailey Strovers '27.

Strovers had a 3-pointer in the game, giving her 75 for her career. That figure ranks 11th in program history.

Grinnell takes to the road Tuesday to face Monmouth College. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
