Sizzling shooting from deep propels Grinnell women past Monmouth

Pioneers post 2nd-best performance from 3-point land in program history

MONMOUTH, Ill. - When a team is as hot from 3-point land as Grinnell College's women's basketball team was Tuesday night, that squad will be nearly unstoppable.

The Pioneers were simply electric from deep, posting the second-best 3-point shooting percentage in program history in an 82-57 victory at Monmouth College.

Grinnell (4-2 MWC, 7-7 overall) stretched its winning streak to a season-long three games while posting its fifth consecutive win over Monmouth, matching a program high.

Grinnell, which put up a season-high point total, shot 56 percent from beyond the arc on 14-of-25 shooting. That ranks second in program history only behind the 63.2 percent effort against St. Norbert College on Feb. 6, 2004.

Ava Wu '29 and Kelsey Ericksen '26 were each 3-of-5 from deep, while Carolyn Pierce '27 and Georgia Patterson '29 added 2-of-2 efforts.

Grinnell featured a balanced scoring attack as Wu tallied 13 points, Ericksen scored 12, Skylar Thomas '26 and Patterson tallied 11 apiece and Nora Lynch '28 put in 10. Patterson's total is a career-high.

Juniper Schwartzman '27 grabbed 10 boards, Pak had three assists and Pierce posted two steals.

Grinnell benefited from a fast start for the second game in a row. After Thomas opened the game's scoring with two free throws, Wu sank a layup and Ericksen drained a 3-pointer for a 7-0 lead. After the hosts closed within 7-4, Thomas made two free throws and Wu and Cassidy Pak '28 each scored from close range for a 13-4 margin.

Monmouth (1-6 MWC, 5-11 overall) stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer, but Grinnell retaliated as Pierce swished in a 3-pointer, Pak got a free throw and Bailey Strovers '27 hit a trey to make it 20-7 by the end of the period. Strovers now ranks 11th in program history for 3-pointers with 76.

Grinnell kept it up in the second frame, building a 40-22 halftime lead and extended the margin to 57-36 after three quarters.

Grinnell is back at Darby Gymnasium Saturday when nationally-ranked Ripon College visits for a league game. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
