Grinnell off to best start in MWC play since 2011-12 with convincing win at Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team is off to its best start in league play in nearly a decade-and-a-half with a convincing 98-74 victory at Knox College Wednesday night.

The Pioneers improved to 7-1 in the Midwest Conference for the first time in 14 years with a balanced scoring attack that saw five players hit double-figure scoring.

Grinnell, which has beaten Knox in six of the past seven meetings, improved to 12-3 overall. The Prairie Fire fell to 2-6 in the league and 6-11 overall.

Grinnell overcame a slow start, falling behind 8-0 before going on a 17-4 run that began with a 3-pointer by Aidan Wiley '29. Kingzten Bristol '29 contributed a pair of free throws, Kai Te Huki '27 drained a trey and Nick Lundy '27 and Nick Courtney '26 added baskets to tie the game at 12-all. Te Huki put the Pioneers ahead to stay with a 3-pointer and Gabe Garcia '27 drove for a layup to make it 17-12. 

The Pioneers increased their lead to 38-26 by halftime and put the game away early in the second stanza. Knox began the second half with a basket to make it a 10-point game, but the Pioneers answered with eight unanswered points as Zach Rosen '26 and Sean Murphy '26 each hit treys and Courtney converted a layup for a 46-28 edge.

Te Huki led Grinnell's scoring attack with 15 points, while Murphy tallied 13 and Garcia and Lundy each put in 12. Also in double digits was Rosen with 10.

Te Huki and Rosen each had five assists and Courtney added a career-high five steals. Te Huki, Rosen and Luka Pinto '29 all had three steals. Garcia grabbed six rebounds and Bristol, Te Huki, Pinto and Courtney had four apiece. Bristol's total was a career-high.

During the game, Te Huki moved up to 13th on Grinnell's all-time scoring chart with 1,476 points and Courtney jumped to 14th for career steals with 139.

Grinnell will entertain Lake Forest College at 1 p.m. Saturday at Darby Gymnasium. Senior Day activities will follow the contest.
