Pioneers post largest margin of victory in series' 58-game history

GRINNELL, Iowa - Fans attending the Grinnell College women's basketball victory over Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon saw a bit of history at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers blasted the Foresters 88-39 before a big Senior Day crowd, with the 49-point edge marking the largest margin of victory by Grinnell in the history of the 58-game series that dates back to 1990.

Grinnell's point total, a season-high, matched its highest in the series as the Pioneers moved to 5-4 in the Midwest Conference and 8-9 overall.

Georgia Patterson '29 erupted for a career-high 16 points for Grinnell, hitting 4-of-5 shots from 3-point land. Bailey Strovers '27 was also in double figures with 10, while Eleanor Cordes '26, Kelsey Ericksen '26 and Amelia Rigel '28 all had eight. Cordes' total was a career-high.

The Pioneers owned the boards by a 47-28 margin, with Juniper Schwartzman '27 grabbing seven, Reese Stephens '27 getting six and Rigel and Megan Walters '29 adding five each. The totals by Stephens, Rigel and Walters were all career-bests.

Carolyn Pierce '27 and Patterson each dished out three assists and Stephens, Cassidy Pak '28 and Skylar Thomas '26 were credited with two steals each.

The outcome was never in doubt, as Grinnell scored the game's first five points on a 3-pointer by Ericksen and layup from Thomas. After Lake Forest, 0-9 in the MWC and 2-16 overall, broke its lull with a basket, it was all Pioneers for the rest of the quarter as they led 26-2 at its conclusion. Patterson and Strovers each had five points in the late-quarter flurry, Nora Lynch '28 added four and Pierce had three.

Grinnell built its lead to 52-15 by halftime and was ahead 70-27 after three quarters.

The Pioneers are on the road Tuesday, facing Beloit College at 7 p.m.
