Grinnell women's basketball team gains revenge on Beloit

Thomas' double-double sparks Pioneers' victory

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College's women's basketball team not only gained a measure of revenge Tuesday night, but the Pioneers remained in the Midwest Conference Tournament hunt in the process.

Grinnell turned the tables on Beloit College, avenging an overtime loss to the Bucs two months ago with a 62-46 victory. The Pioneers improved to 6-4 in the league and evened their overall mark at 9-9.

Skylar Thomas '26 was a dominating force for the Pioneers, posting a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Her rebound total ties a career-best. Thomas led a balanced Grinnell scoring attack that saw Ava Wu '29 and Juniper Schwartzman '27 each score 10.

Grinnell also benefitted from stellar free throw shooting, hitting 16-of-19 shots from the stripe.

Beloit, 5-14 overall and 2-8 in the MWC, shot out to an 11-7 lead in the early going before Grinnell rallied to take the lead. The Bucs were still within 17-16 late in the first period when the Pioneers delivered the decisive blow with a 14-point run over the next several minutes. Wu finished off the first quarter with a driving layup and 3-pointer for a 22-16 edge.

Bailey Strovers '27 opened the second frame with a basket, Thomas sank two free throws, Carolyn Pierce '27 swished in a 3-pointer and Megan Walters '29 delivered a pair of free throws to put Grinnell ahead 31-16 with 1:54 left in the half.

The Pioneers led 35-20 at halftime and kept up the pace in the third period, outscoring Beloit 14-10 to hold a 49-30 lead at its conclusion. Beloit made a slight surge in the final quarter, closing the gap to eight, but Grinnell responded to secure the 16-point victory.

Kelsey Ericksen '26 dished out a career-high three assists for Grinnell, she and Cassidy Pak '28 came up with two steals apiece and Pierce blocked a career-best two shots.

The Pioneers are on the road again Saturday, playing Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. Tip-off is 3 p.m.
