Red-hot Grinnell men continue winning ways with 22-point victory at Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. - The red-hot Grinnell College men's basketball team kept up its winning ways Tuesday, completing a regular-season sweep of Beloit College with a 98-76 victory.

Grinnell, which has won its last five meetings against the Bucs, posted its 12th victory in the last 13 outings. The Pioneers have lost only once since mid-November and are off to their best start -  both overall and conference - since the 2011-12 campaign.

The Pioneers bolted out to a 14-point lead in the first half against Beloit, saw the Bucs close within a point in the second half and then pulled away for the victory.

Grinnell (14-3, 9-1 MWC) built a 47-33 lead in the opening stanza after Zach Rosen's '26 layup with 1:19 left. But the hosts finished the half with a 9-1 run to reduce the margin to 48-42 by intermission.

Beloit (5-14, 0-10 MWC) scratched its way back early in the second half, charging back within 59-58 on a pair of free throws at the 14:13 mark.

But that's when, like so many other instances this season, the Pioneers rose to the occasion. Gabe Garcia '27 scored on an assist from Kingzten Bristol '29 and then converted another layup to stretch the lead to 63-58.

Sean Murphy '26 then caught fire, draining consecutive treys followed by a 3-pointer by Rosen to make it a 72-58 lead with 9:44 remaining. Grinnell kept it up from there to secure the easy victory.

Rosen poured in a team-high 22 points for Grinnell and was one of five Pioneers to hit double figures. He made 8-of-12 shots from the field.

Garcia put in 19 points, Murphy tallied 18, Kai Te Huki '27 scored 12 and Tyler Copes '29 chipped in with 11. Murphy continued his sizzling performance from 3-point land, making 5-of-6 long-range shots.

Luka Pinto '29 grabbed six rebounds for Grinnell, Rosen distributed seven assists and Nick Courtney '26 and Bristol each had three steals. Bristol's marked a career-high. Rosen now ranks 10th for career assists at Grinnell with 265, while Te Huki moved up to 15th for career free throws made with 281.

The Pioneers are on the road again Saturday, playing Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
