Grinnell overcomes slow start before falling to Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - Grinnell College's women's basketball team made a valiant second-quarter comeback, but Lawrence University retaliated with a big run of its own for a 66-42 victory Saturday afternoon.

Lawrence, currently second place in the Midwest Conference standings, shot out to a 14-1 lead by the end of the first period. Grinnell refused to fold, though, reeling off 10 unanswered points on a pair of 3-pointers by Nora Lynch '28, jumper from Juniper Schwartzman '27 and two free throws by Skylar Thomas '26 to make it a 14-11 game just two minutes into the second frame.

Grinnell (6-5 in the MWC, 9-10 overall) was down by nine a few minutes later, but again rallied as Thomas recorded a layup and Ava Wu '29 drained a trey to make it 20-16.

The Pioneers got within four points two other times, the final instance at 24-20 on Carolyn Pierce's '27 free throw with 1:56 left. But the Vikings finished the half with a seven-point run and scored the first five points of the second half to built a 36-20 lead.

Grinnell got as close as 11 twice after that, the last time on Wu's jumper with 7:41 remaining that made it 38-27. But Lawrence (8-2 MWC 15-4 overall) answered with 12 consecutive points and was ahead 50-27 entering the final frame.

Lynch led Grinnell's balanced scoring attack with 11 points, including a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc, and Wu scored 10. Schwartzman grabbed seven rebounds, Thomas dished out two assists and Bailey Strovers '27 came up with two steals.

Grinnell is at home Wednesday when Monmouth College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. test.
