Grinnell men's tennis team expects another strong campaign this spring

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's tennis team has displayed a level of dominance unmatched in the history of Midwest Conference athletics.

The Pioneers have claimed 21 consecutive Midwest Conference titles and recorded a string of 196 straight victories against league foes entering the 2025-26 campaign.

Grinnell, looking for its 19th consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament, will be led by seniors Lucas Willett '26 and Albert Bostoen '26. Willett, who joined the elite 100-win club last season, was a MWC champ at No. 1 singles and doubles last season. He owns six overall individual MWC titles and posted 12 singles and 13 doubles victories last season. Bostoen, a MWC champ at No. 3 doubles last season, has claimed two league titles in his career. Last season, he was 9-5 in doubles.

"Lucas has been a mainstay at the top of our singles and doubles lineup, and I'm looking for him to continue to elevate his game," said Grinnell coach Zack Hasenyager. "Albert battled some injuries last season but now is in position to capitalize on his talent and make a big impact as a team leader."

Third-year athletes are Anshul Satav '27 and Keegan McLaughlin '27. Satav, the MWC singles champ at the No. 5 singles slot last year, was 7-1 in singles while McLaughlin posted six overall victories. "They've done a great job in terms of bringing a high level of energy and diverse game styles," said Hasenyager. "With a ton of players graduating last year, they can capitalize on their experience to lead the team."

The second-year class is not only large, but talented. That group includes Henry Park '28 (15-10 singles last year, seven doubles victories, MWC champ at No. 3 singles), Kaan Mac Donald '28 (5-1 singles, 3-1 doubles), Aman Kothari '28 (6-1 singles, 10-0 doubles), Alex Doane '28 (10-2 singles, 11-0 doubles, MWC champ at No. 6 singles), Juan Diego Carpio '28 (8-1 singles, 2-0 doubles), Caden Branum '28 (6-1 singles, 4-1 doubles) and Gervase Ngo '28 (transfer from NCAA D-I Hawaii).

"This class gained a lot of experience last year, mostly in exhibition and lower-level matches," said Hasenyager. "They enjoyed a lot of success during that time, and many are ready to take the next step. Henry was a strong starter for us in singles last year, and Alex and Aman won a lot of doubles matches. Gervase brings a great competitive spirit and has melded smoothly … he will be a strong addition to the singles and doubles mix. I'm excited to see the continued growth from this class."

The first-year class includes Maxi Gutbezahl '29, Josh Kruger '29, Tavin Lee '29, Paul Leighninger '29, Garvin Murray '29 and Devansh Punjabi '29. "Early signs have shown this to be a really talented group with many contending for starting spots in singles and doubles right away," said Hasenyager. "Not only are they talented, but it's a diverse group representing many areas of the nation and world."

Hasenyager's team will again play a tough schedule, which includes nine teams that appeared in the national rankings last season not including a smattering of NCAA D-I and NAIA foes. "We're heading to Virginia for spring break, where we'll see some new opponents," he said. "It's always nice to get out of our comfort zone with tough competition. That should prepare us for conference play with the goal of qualifying for the NCAAs again and advancing as far as possible."
