Grinnell women begin key stretch of MWC play with decisive victory over Monmouth

GRINNELL, Iowa - With every game being as important as the next in the waning days of Midwest Conference play, Grinnell College's women's basketball team collected a big victory Wednesday night.

After Monmouth College scored right off the bat for its lone lead of the game, it was all Grinnell. The Pioneers reeled off eight points in a row and never looked back on their way to a 71-42 victory at Darby Gymnasium.

Grinnell improved to 7-5 in the league, a half-game out of fourth place. The top four teams qualify for the league's postseason tournament.

The Pioneers spread the wealth, with 15 players finding the scoring column and no one player having more than 10 points.

Grinnell, which evened its overall record at 10-10, has won six in a row against the Fighting Scots dating back to 2023. That marks the Pioneers' longest win streak in the 95-game series which dates back to 1978. Additionally, Grinnell's 29-point margin of victory is the largest ever in the series. It eclipsed the 27-point margin in 1980.

Monmouth, 3-9 in the league and 7-14 in all games, scored 27 seconds into the game before Grinnell's Skylar Thomas '26 made a layup and Kelsey Ericksen '26 and Ava Wu '29 drained 3-pointers for an 8-2 lead. Ericksen now ranks 15th in program history with 70 treys.

Grinnell led 13-9 after one period, and it was still a close game at 17-11 when the Pioneers went on an eight-point run to open things up. Wu began the spurt with a trey, Cassidy Pak '28 sank a layup and Carolyn Pierce '27 swished a trey for a 25-11 lead. The Pioneers kept it up from there, leading 32-18 at halftime.

The Pioneers continued the trend in the second half, holding a 19-12 scoring edge in the third quarter and 20-12 margin in the fourth.

Wu led the scoring attack with 10 points, Pak had nine and Nora Lynch '28 and Skylar Thomas '26 scored eight apiece. Juniper Schwartzman led the rebounding department with 12 and Thomas added seven. Thomas dished out four assists and had two steals, the same steals total as Bailey Strovers '27.

Grinnell is off for nearly a week before entertaining Illinois College next Tuesday. Action at Darby is set for 7:30 p.m.
