Pioneers brush away history with critical victory at Lake Forest

Grinnell snaps 8-match winless streak against Foresters

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Grinnell College's men's soccer team entered Saturday's battle with a mountain of history to overcome.

The Pioneers went to Lake Forest College's pitch having an eight-match winless streak against the Foresters, dating back to 2021, and hadn't won on Lake Forest's field in the last four tries.

All that changed Saturday as the Pioneers clipped the hosts 1-0 in a critical Midwest Conference battle.

Jake Lu '30 scored the lone goal of the contest and Jack Alexander '29 worked the shutout at keeper for the Pioneers.

With the three big points that accompany a league win, Grinnell boosted its total to 12 while improving to 4-2 in the MWC and 10-2-1 overall. Lake Forest dipped to 3-2-1 in the league and 5-5-2 in all contests.

Grinnell, which reached double-digit victories for the first time since 2022, saw Lu score in the 14th minute on assists by Samuel Gojjam '27 and Zander Salva '29. The goal was the fourth of the season for Lu, while Gojjam posted his team-high seventh assist and Salva his first.

Lake Forest won the shots battle 12-9 and had seven corners compared to four for Grinnell. Demi Oni '27 and Lu each had four shots apiece for Grinnell and Gojjam added one.

Alexander recorded two saves at the keeper spot. He has five shutouts this season

Grinnell is back home next Saturday, hosting Lawrence University at Springer Field. Kickoff is 11 a.m.
