Grinnell volleyball team blows past Illinois College in 3 sets

GRINNELL, Iowa - Not only did the Grinnell College volleyball team win a battle of once-beaten Midwest Conference squads Saturday, but the Pioneers did so in convincing fashion.

Grinnell ran its mark to 3-1 in the MWC and 7-9 overall at Darby Gymnasium with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 victory over Illinois College. The win stretched the Pioneers' victory streak to three.

The Pioneers not only put together a .240 hitting efficiency, but held the Lady Blues to a negative figure.

Seniors Millie Leonard '27 and Keira Sullivan '27 led the way at the net for Grinnell, with Leonard pounding down 12 kills and hitting .455 and Sullivan adding seven kills and hitting .357. Leticia Machado '29 had seven kills, as well. Sullivan now has 715 kills in her career, moving up to 15th on GC's all-time chart.

The team's other senior, Kylie-Ann Smith '27, had 22 assists and Gracie Lim '28 served up two aces. Lim also had 14 digs and Machado three block assists.

Illinois College, 2-2 in the league and 8-8 overall, shot out to a 7-2 lead in the first set before Grinnell gradually crept back into contention. The hosts led 19-18 and then closed out the set with a six-point run that included two aces by Lim and kill from Leonard.

The Pioneers used a six-point run early in the second set to turn a tie into an 8-2 lead. Leonard had a kill in that span as Grinnell never looked back.

It was more of the same in the third set, as the Pioneers turned a 1-all tie into a 9-1 lead. Machado and Mia Meert '30 each had two kills in that span as the Pioneers cruised to victory.

Grinnell is on the road next weekend, playing at Luther College on Friday and at Cornell College Saturday.
