Grinnell assures itself a 5-win season, gains some revenge in the process

Pioneers snap 13-game skid to Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College assured itself a five-win season for the first time since 2011 while gaining a huge measure of revenge in the process.

Grinnell never trailed on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Rosenbloom Field, scoring a touchdown on its opening drive and getting defensive from there for a 7-3 victory over Cornell College.

The Pioneers halted a 13-game losing streak to the Rams, dating back to 2008, and held the visitors to their lowest point total in the series since 1986.

Andre Lopez '30 sparked the Pioneer offense with a career-best 163 yards, the highest rushing total of the season for GC. Grinnell rushed the ball 57 times for 302 yards, with the attempt total serving as the highest this season.

Ryan Feldman '29 highlighted the special teams with a booming 72-yard punt, the sixth-longest in Pioneer history.

Luke Konczal '29 posted 12 tackles for the Pioneers and had an interception, while Peyton Williams '27 and Adam Whalen '28 each got seven stops and Nolan Novak '29 added six. Whalen had three tackles for loss and a sack.

Grinnell, 4-2 in the Midwest Conference and 5-3 in all games, took the opening kickoff and put together a seven-play, 80-yard scoring drive. Lopez ripped off a 40-yard run on the game's opening play from scrimmage and later added a TD from 13 yards out. Feldman's extra point made it 7-0.

Cornell, 3-4 in the MWC and 3-5 in all games, also scored on its opening drive with a field goal.

Mapalo Mwabi '30, who last week had two interceptions, got another early in the second period to halt a Rams' drive. The teams continued to trade possessions throughout the game, including one late where Konczal put an end to a Cornell series with a pickoff in Grinnell territory.

The Pioneers held strong after that to secure the victory.

Grinnell has a week off before traveling to Monmouth College on Nov. 7. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
