Grinnell volleyball team serves up victory over Knox

Pioneers tie school mark for aces in a 3-setter with 18

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's volleyball team served up a victory - literally - over Knox College Friday night in Midwest Conference play.

The Pioneers tied a school record for most ace serves in a three-set match, piling up 18 in a 25-13, 25-18, 25-9 sweep of the Prairie Fire at Darby Gymnasium. That ace total tied the mark established against Robert Morris in 2017.

The 18 aces rank fourth for a match overall and Emilee Appel's '29 six aces are 10th individually in a three-setter.

The sweep stretched Grinnell's set victory streak against the Prairie Fire to 28, dating back to 2018. Grinnell has won 12 matches in a row against Knox, going back to 2018, and won seven in a row at home against the Prairie Fire in a streak going back to 2015.

Besides Appel's ace total, Millie Leonard '27 and Keira Sullivan '27 added four apiece and Kylie-Ann Smith '27 and Sophia Ochoa '30 had two each.

Grinnell hit .291 for the match while holding the Prairie Fire to a .038 efficiency. Sullivan had 11 kills for the hosts while hitting .346 and Leticia Machado '29 had 10 kills and hit .474.

Smith distributed 26 assists and Gracie Lim '28 had 13 digs. Ella Tulimieri '30 came up with three blocks assists and Sullivan added a pair.

The Pioneers, 6-9 overall and 2-1 in the MWC, used a big run in the first set to turn a four-point lead into a 20-10 cushion. Sullivan had three aces during the run and Machado added a kill as Grinnell cruised to victory.

Knox, 3-15 overall and 0-3 in the league, was within 14-12 in the second set when Grinnell went on a critical five-point run that included two aces by Leonard and kills by Kinsey Carrigan '30 and Sullivan. After the Prairie Fire pulled within 20-18, Grinnell scored five in a row to win the set. Sullivan had an ace in that span, Machado posted two kills and Tulimieri had a kill.

The third set was tied 5-all before the Pioneers opened things up with a five-point run. Later, leading 10-7, Grinnell caught fire with an 11-point spurt. Appel served 10 of those points, including five aces, while Sullivan and Tulimieri had kills.

During the match, Sullivan moved up to ninth on Grinnell's career list for assists with 1288.

Grinnell entertains Illinois College in a big conference test at 1 p.m. Saturday. Free breadsticks and donuts will be given to the first 150 Pioneer student fans in attendance.
