Grinnell defense stands tall in loss to MWC co-leader Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Grinnell College held Midwest Conference co-leader Monmouth College nearly 150 yards under its season average, but the Fighting Scots still managed to record a 34-7 victory over the Pioneers Saturday afternoon.

Grinnell fell behind 14-0 after one quarter, but managed to pull within 14-7 by halftime. The touchdown was set up by an Adrian Stubbs' '28 interception that was returned to Monmouth's 13-yard line with 3:26 left in the half. Three plays later, Andre Lopez '30 scored from 7 yards out with 1:55 left and Ryan Feldman '29 kicked the point after.

Monmouth managed two touchdowns in the third period and another in the fourth.

The Pioneer defense was stout all game, particularly in the first half when it forced three Monmouth punts as well as a turnover on downs. 

Luke Konczal '29 posted 13 tackles to lead Grinnell's defense, while CJ Readon '27, Adam Whalen '28 and Benton Tso '29 added six each. Peyton Williams '27 and Mapalo Mwabi '30 added five tackles apiece. 

Lopez rushed for 65 yards to lead the offense and Feldman had 38 receiving yards.

Grinnell, 4-3 in the MWC and 5-4 overall, closes out the season next Saturday at home against Luther College. The Senior Day contest kicks off at 1 p.m.

Monmouth improved to 7-0 in the league and 7-2 overall.
