Pioneer women's basketball team gears up for huge contest

Grinnell can earn spots in MWC Tourney with victory Saturday at Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - It'll all come down to Saturday.

That's the spot the Grinnell College's women's basketball team finds itself in following Wednesday night's 68-67 setback to Knox College in a physical battle at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers are 7-8 in the league, a game behind Cornell College entering the matchup between the two at 3 p.m. Saturday in Mount Vernon. The winner will get the fourth and final spot in the MWC Tournament.

Playing the final home game of her Pioneer career, Grinnell's Skylar Thomas '26 showed her durability over four years by setting a program record for career games played with 97.

Grinnell, 10-13 overall, rallied from a 13-5 deficit to make a game of it. Megan Walters '29 began the comeback with a free throw and Thomas added two. The teams traded free throws to end the quarter which ended with Knox leading 15-9.

The Pioneers used a 10-point run early in the second quarter to take command. Trailing 19-16, Cassidy Pak '28 made a layup and free throw, Ava Wu '29 sank a trey, Georgia Patterson '29 converted a free throw and Thomas drained a shot from beyond the arc to put the Pioneers ahead 26-19 with 4:42 left. The Pioneers went into the locker room with a 34-32 edge.

Twice Grinnell opened a four-point lead in the third quarter, the last time at 40-36 on a jumper by Juniper Schwartzman '27. But the Prairie Fire countered and opened up a 10-point lead before being ahead 55-48 at the end of the frame.

Grinnell played catch-up for most of the fourth period. Trailing by eight points, Thomas converted a layup and free throw and Wu connected on a layup to make it a three-point game at 65-62 with 1:23 left.

Knox followed with three free throws in a row to go ahead 68-62 with 10 seconds left. Nora Lynch '28 made a layup with 6 seconds left and got a 3-pointer at the buzzer to account for the final score.

Wu led Grinnell with 17 points, Lynch had 15 and Thomas scored 13. Thomas also had eight boards, as did Bailey Strovers '27. Pak dished out six assists, Schwartzman had three steals and Walters added two blocks.

Knox improved to 11-4 in the MWC and 13-11 with the victory.
