Pioneer baseball team bounces back to take second game of twin bill

LINCOLN, Neb. - Grinnell College's baseball team bounced back from an opening-game shutout loss to tackle Nebraska Wesleyan University 5-2 in the second game of a twin bill Saturday.

The 2-4 Pioneers trailed the game 2-1 before going ahead to stay with three runs in the sixth and tacking on another in the eighth.

Four Grinnell pitchers combined on a three-hitter, with Joshua Chung '28 getting the win by tossing four innings of no-hit relief and fanning five. Ajay Griffin '27 added another inning of hitless relief and Connor Pink '29 worked the final inning to get the save.

Stuart Cash '27 and Nikolas Ruden '26 each had two hits in the Pioneers' seven-hit attack. Ruden belted a solo homer to left in the second inning before the big sixth inning where Maddux Anderson '29 plated a run on an error, Ruden hit into an RBI groundout and Joe Chanis '27 had an RBI infield single. In the eighth, Ruden reached base on an error to knock in another run.

In the opener, the 2-2 Prairie Wolves broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 3-0 victory. Jackson Gutta '27 tossed four innings of hitless ball for Grinnell and struck out four before giving way to the relief staff.

Grinnell begins its spring break trip next weekend, playing at Rhodes College Saturday and Sunday.
